Greenway Studio has explored a myriad of techniques to maximise every square inch of this property. Here, we’ve designed a gabled nook with rolling shutters. The simple mechanics of these shutters allow vast views across a public reserve and a cool breeze; when privacy and shelter are required the screens are easily closed, creating an intimate enclosure. The gabled form of this structure is directly informed by the pitch of the existing home. Large grade nikau will be planted either side to create a passive climate control and nestle the nook into the landscape without the hassle of leaves dropping in the pool.
On the east side of the pool, an ordinarily unsightly pool cover box is transformed into a generous daybed. With a west facing aspect this lounger becomes the ideal position for sunbathing and drying off after a dip. Considered placement of a mature nikau palm will cast dappled shade over adjustable backrests, providing a retreat from the high sun.
Large sliding doors on the south side of this newly renovated villa will open onto a covered, outdoor entertaining space. An outdoor kitchen complete with an in-situ cast concrete bench, wood fired asado grill and a bar fridge align seamlessly with the interior kitchen making this the ideal spot to entertain small or large groups. The west end of this space will house an outdoor fireplace, L-shaped sofa and bean bags.
Precise outdoor lighting will enhance the carefully landscaped gardens further. Strip lighting countersunk into raised, concrete garden beds, up-lit specimen trees and pool lights will illuminate the gardens without harsh direct light catching the eye.
